Somebody comes in almost weekly asking a version of the same question: they’ve been stretching their lower back for months, it helps for an hour or two, and then it’s right back to feeling locked up. They want to know if they’re doing the stretches wrong.
Usually they’re not. The stretches are fine. The problem is what they’re being asked to do.
Yes, stretching can help. Here’s where it actually works
Static stretching does produce real, measurable effects on tissue tolerance and short-term range of motion. If your low back feels tight after a long drive or a day at a desk, a few minutes of stretching can genuinely take the edge off. There’s also decent evidence that stretching reduces the rate of muscle strain injuries specifically, even if it doesn’t do much for tendon injuries or overall injury rates across the board (1). If your lower back pain is coming from an acute muscle strain, some gentle stretching as part of recovery is reasonable and unlikely to hurt.
That’s the honest, unglamorous answer to half the question. Stretching is a legitimate tool for a specific, narrower job than most people assume it’s doing.
Where it consistently falls short
Chronic, recurring lower back pain is a different animal than a strained muscle, and this is where stretching alone tends to disappoint people who’ve been doing it faithfully for years.
The lumbar spine has around 13 degrees of total rotation available to it, split across five vertebral segments (2). It’s not built to be the primary source of rotational or flexion movement in your body. The hips and thoracic spine are. When either of those regions loses range, most people don’t feel it there. They feel it in the low back, because the low back is the segment absorbing the movement demand nobody else is supplying.
That’s why a stretch aimed directly at the low back can feel good in the moment and change nothing about the actual pattern. You’re stretching the tissue taking the compensatory load, not the joint that’s actually restricted. It’s the equivalent of icing a sprained ankle every day without ever addressing why you keep rolling it.
The research on stretching and injury prevention broadly backs this up. A frequently cited 2004 review found stretching was not significantly associated with a reduction in overall injury rates (3). Stretching changes how a tissue feels. It doesn’t necessarily change why a region keeps getting overloaded in the first place.
What’s usually actually restricted
In the assessments we run at Motive Training, restricted hip internal or external rotation shows up constantly in people with chronic low back complaints, along with a thoracic spine that’s stopped rotating from years of sitting and screen time. Neither of those restrictions announces itself directly. They show up as a lower back that never quite settles down, no matter how much attention it gets on its own.
We go deeper on this mechanism here, but the short version is that closing those hip and thoracic restrictions tends to do more for chronic low back pain than any amount of directly stretching the low back itself.
One caveat worth naming directly: if your pain radiates down the leg, follows a nerve pattern, or gets worse with stretching rather than better, that’s a different problem with a different mechanism, and general stretching advice doesn’t apply the same way. That gets its own explanation here.
What actually closes the gap
The reason stretching alone plateaus is that it only addresses one variable: how comfortable your nervous system is with a stretched position. It doesn’t teach you to control that new range under load, which is the thing that actually protects a joint during a deadlift, a sneeze, or picking a kid up off the floor.

In practice it means pairing passive stretching with active end-range work like PAILs and RAILs, so the hip or thoracic restriction actually driving your back pain gets built into a range you can control, not just a range you can visit.
So, are lower back stretches effective
For short-term tightness or a strained muscle, yes, reasonably. For chronic low back pain that keeps coming back no matter how consistent you are, stretching the low back is very often solving the wrong joint. If you’ve been stretching faithfully for months with nothing to show for it, that’s usually not a discipline problem. It’s a sign the actual restriction lives somewhere your stretch routine never reaches.
